Troubleshooting LAN

This message generally appears after you lose a network signal. You may lose a network signal for several reasons. Use the following options to determine the cause of this issue:
The network cable is loose or unplugged. To resolve this issue, verify that the network cable is plugged in securely to the correct locations on the computer and on the network device.

Note Some computers may have multiple network adapters. If you are not sure where to connect the network cable on the computer, see the computer documentation, or contact the computer manufacturer.
The network cable is defective or damaged. Examine the cable for breaks, for tears in the outer covering, or for damaged connectors. Test the network connection by using a network cable that works. If another network cable resolves the issue, replace the defective network cable.
The network cable is plugged in securely at both ends, but the network device may not be turned on. Verify that all network hardware is plugged in to a power supply if it is required and is turned on. To resolve this issue, you may have to reset the network device. Some network devices have a reset button. Other network devices require that you turn off the power, wait for several minutes, and then turn the power back on. For more information about how to reset the network device, see its documentation.
The network connection may be universal serial bus (USB)-based and may be plugged into a USB hub. Issues can occur on some USB hubs because of power constraints. Non-powered and congested hubs may not supply sufficient power. To resolve this issue, connect the network device directly into the USB port on the computer.
The network cable may be the wrong type of cable. For example, a crossover cable does not function correctly as a regular network cable. To resolve this issue, replace the network cable with a network cable that works.
The network cable is not connected to the correct port on the network device. To resolve this issue, verify that the network cable is connected to the correct port on the network device. You may lose the network signal if you connect the cable to the uplink port on a hub, on a switch, or on a router instead of on a regular port. If you are not sure where to connect the network cable, see the hardware documentation.
Some hubs, switches, and routers disable the port next to the uplink port when the uplink port is being used. To resolve this issue, verify that the port next to the uplink port is empty. If you cannot locate the uplink port, see the hardware documentation.
If the network adapter supports a power management option, the following check box may be selected:
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
If the network adapter supports this option, it is available on the Power Management tab of the network adapter properties dialog box. To resolve this issue, disable this option on the Power Management tab. For more information about how to disable this power management option, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
811595 "A network cable has been unplugged" message appears at seemingly random intervals
The value for the Media Type property on the network adapter may be set to Auto Select. This property is located on the Advanced tab of the network adapter properties dialog box. To resolve this issue, change the value of the Media Type property to a specific bandwidth. For example, set the value to 10Mbps/Full Duplex, to 100Mbps/Full Duplex, or to an optimum value.

Note The steps to change this property vary depending on the manufacturer of the network adapter. In most scenarios, you can follow these steps to change the value of the Media Type property:
Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Configure.
In the resulting dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
In the Property list, click Media Type or Link Speed & Duplex or something similar.

Note If these properties do not appear, look for a property that has the values Duplex and Half-Duplex.
Click a specific bandwidth in the Value list, and then click OK.
Close the Network Connections dialog box.
Test the network connection.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, repeat steps 1 through 5, and then click a different value in step 6 until you have tested all values.
If you are using a PCI network adapter, the issue may relate to resources. To resolve this issue, physically move the network adapter to an adjacent PCI slot, and then restart the computer. After you restart the computer, the New Hardware Wizard detects and installs the network adapter. If you do not know how to install the network adapter, contact the computer manufacturer, or see the network adapter documentation.

Use HTML color picker to find your HTML color code

Below is an HTML color code picker script that resembles the Adobe Photoshop color picker. Using this online tool you can select the color you want to use in your web page or blog. Your browser must have JavaScript enabled in order to use this tool, if enabled use the middle multi-color scroll bar to scroll up or down to the color you want. If you want to select the shade of color, click the shade you want in the large shade box. Finally, the color code will appear in the bottom-right corner # box. If you want to keep that color, click the text boxes below the color picker and then select the color and then click the alternate box to begin with a new color.
Use our HTML color picker if you need to choose from an almost infinite variety of colors. Also, if you like a color scheme of a web page view Tip142 for a fantastic tool that can be used to gather that page's color codes.

Accessing the Device Manager

Windows 95/98/Me

  1. Click Start, then select Settings -> Control Panel
  2. Select System applet, then Device Manager tab.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP

  1. Select the Start menu at the bottom-right of your screen.
  2. Choose Control Panel (or Settings, then Control Panel on some computers).
  3. In the window that opens, double-click the control panel titled System. If there is no item titled System listed in the Control Panels window, click the link in the upper-left of the window titled Switch To Classic View. The System Control Panel icon should now be visible to the right. Double-click it to open the System Properties window.
  4. At the top of the System Properties window that opens, click the tab titled Hardware.
  5. Then click the button labeled Device manager. You will be presented with a list of all the components installed on your computer.

  • Alternative 1:
    1. Right-click My Computer then select Properties
    2. Select the Hardware tab
    3. Click the Device Manager button
  • Alternative 2: Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc -> OK
  • Alternative 3: Type "devmgmt.msc" into the Command Prompt
  • Alternative 4: Device Manager is part of Computer Management, which also includes Event Viewer, Services Manager, Disk Management and many other things. Right-Click My Computer then select Manage to start Computer Management, or invoke compmgmt.msc, or launch it via the shortcut in Control Panel, Administrative Tools.
  • Alternative 5: Press and hold down the Windows key and press the Pause/Break key.
  • Alternative 6: Create a batch file(.bat) to run Device Manager. A one line entry of devmgmt.msc into an ANSI text file with the extension (.bat) suffices. However you can also invoke instance settings, such as displaying non-present devices, by adding an additional first command line
    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
for an overall structure like this:
    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
  • Alternative 7: Instead of a batch file, simply create a shortcut leading to devmgmt.msc

Device Manager

The Device Manager is a Control Panel applet in Microsoft Windows operating systems. It allows users to view and control the hardware attached to the computer. When a piece of hardware is not working, the offending hardware is highlighted for the user to deal with. The list of hardware can be sorted by various criteria.
For each device, users can:
  • Supply device drivers for the hardware
  • Enable or disable devices
  • Tell Windows to ignore malfunctioning devices
  • View other technical properties
Device Manager was introduced with Windows 95 and later added to Windows 2000 by Ruben Ashimbanga. In NT-based versions, it is included as a Microsoft Management Console snap-in.

Receive Error When CD is Put in Computer

Search:

Issue:

Receive error when CD is put in computer.

Cause:

There are several possible reasons your CD-ROM may generate errors when placed in the computer. Below are the most common reasons, which are also discussed in this document.

  1. Dirty CD-ROM drive or CD causing CD not to be read properly.
  2. Third-party program running causing issue.
  3. CD-ROM not setup properly.
  4. CD is a bad burned CD or CD was copied from protected CD.
  5. CD is auto-running causing error.
  6. Windows is corrupted causing CD to generate error.

Solution:

Dirty CD-ROM drive or CD causing CD not to be read properly

Generally, it is very common for dust, dirt, hair or other material on a CD or CD-ROM drive to cause the CD to be improperly read or generate errors because data cannot be read from the CD.

  • See our Cleaning page for additional information on how to properly clean your CDs and CD-ROM drive.

Third-party program running causing issue

It is possible that third-party programs that may be running or running in the background are causing errors with the CD; it is recommended you close all programs as well as End task any programs that may be running in the background to ensure they are not causing your issues.

  • See document CHTSR for additional information on how to temporally remove all third-party programs that may be running in the background.

CD-ROM not setup properly

If the CD-ROM is not installed or setup properly this can cause the CDs to not be read or be read properly. If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98 it is recommended that you check in Device Manager and verify no conflicts or errors are currently occurring with the installed CD-ROM drive.

CD is a bad burned CD or CD was copied from protected CD

If you have created a CD (burned a CD) and are unable to read it or are getting errors with the CD, it is likely that either the CD was burned improperly or that the CD you copied was protected and that it cannot be copied. It is recommended you either attempt to burn the CD again or verify with the software vendor to verify that the CD is not protected from being copied.

CD is auto-running causing error

If you are using Windows 95 or Windows 98, autorun can, in some cases, cause errors when first placed in the computer. It is recommended that you eject the CD from the computer and when the CD is placed back into the computer, hold the left shift key on the keyboard. Holding the left shift key down will disable the auto-running feature temporarily. Once the CD-ROM light is done flashing, if you receive no error, open My Computer and right-click on the CD-ROM drive and click Explore to see if you receive errors reading the CD.

Windows is corrupted causing CD to generate error

If you are running Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME, it is possible that Windows may be corrupted causing the CD-ROM drive to not be properly read and we recommend that it be tested from MS-DOS. Before trying the below recommendation, ensure that you have tried all of the above steps first.

We recommend that you use a bootable diskette that has CD-ROM drivers on it and test the CD-ROM drive from MS-DOS.

If you receive errors from MS-DOS it is likely that the CD-ROM drive is bad.

If you do not receive errors from MS-DOS and the CD-ROM drive reads properly, it is likely that Windows is corrupted and we recommend that it be reinstalled.

  • Additional information on bootable disks can be found on our boot disk page.

Bad drive / bad discs

If you've determined you're only encountering errors with only one disc you can attempt to recover the data from the disc and/or test the drive further using the software programs in document CH001090.
